At SketchX, we aim at better understanding of human sketch data and how such insight can in turn benefit computer vision and cognitive science at large. If you happen to think the same, join us.

About Me:

I defended my PhD at Queen Mary University of London in 2020, advised by Prof. Yi-Zhe Song and Prof. Tao Xiang. Before that, I received a Bachelor's Degree (First Class Honours) from the Sino-UK Joint Programme held between Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Queen Mary University of London 2016. I delivered the valedictory speech to the class of 2016.

I enjoy problems that require marrying advances in machine learning with insights from computer vision, domain-specific knowledge and human practice. In particular, I have heavily invested on computational modelling of human sketch data with the goal of explaining human seeing by drawing. See this survey article accepted by TPAMI'21 on how sketch research has transformed the world of fine-grained visual analysis.

I am a strong advocate for human-centred AI. I develop AI solutions to help understand the deep needs, aspirations and drives that underlies humans in their unique sense of beings. I mix qualitative and quantitative research methods to better understand how humans perceive technology, and what they need when interacting and collaborating with it. For a more concrete overview of my research interests, see here.

I start a day with coffee. I like neo-classic (piano) music, which takes the best bits of classical music and mixes them up into a delicious sound salad, often in a spirit of minimalism. I enjoy watching Nature/Wildlife documentary (BBC Earth for example). The raw but profound power of nature always transforms my perception of the mundane, and helps me to find happiness in sorrow.
